Archiving Old Work
This week I pulled out a banker’s box from the basement and scanned a ton of old Unbound comics directly from the local paper. As I worked I asked myself why I hadn’t bothered to do this before and then I remembered - for the first five years of the comic I used a broken scanner.
I ended up scanning about 103 pages. Is this a good idea? Is it a bad Idea? The truth is I don’t know. It might be a total waste, but I think you have to err on the side of being a good steward toward your own work. Besides, I really like the way all this looks.
There’s a warm texture to this stuff which is why I always try to present comics this way in the newsletter. These are art assets. I could use these as spot art in book collections, banners etc.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that if nothing ever comes of it, I’m still only out a couple hours of my time. Hardly the worst outcome. Newsprint is also notorious for being “the bad paper,” which I find amusing because I have such a deep love for the stuff. It’s true though, it’s cheap paper and as it’s exposed to light and moisture it yellows and becomes brittle to the touch. In the most extreme cases it can literally reduce itself to crumbs! It’s always actively destroying itself. I have at least two more of these boxes lying around somewhere...
I better get scanning! - Doug
